Restore Funding for Ocean Park & Fairview Branch Libraries

Libraries are more than just places for reading—they are vital hubs where individuals and families connect, learn, and thrive. But right now, our Ocean Park and Fairview Branch Libraries are only open for self-service two days a week due to funding cuts.

Without additional City Council funding, 30% of Santa Monica residents will continue to lack access to a fully staffed neighborhood library. While we recognize budget constraints, restoring staffing at these branches twice a week would cost only $500,000–$600,000—a tiny fraction of the city’s overall budget, yet one that would have an outsized impact on our community.

If funding isn’t restored in this year’s budget, the next opportunity won’t come for two more years—meaning it will have been seven years since these libraries were adequately staffed. We can’t let this happen.

Now is the time to act! Please email Santa Monica City Council and urge them to prioritize funding for these vital branches. Your voice can make a difference in ensuring our libraries remain accessible, welcoming spaces for all.
